The different types of double glazing
The importance of the right type of double glazing
Do you want to reglaze windows in your house or apartment? Then choosing the right double glazing is essential. Do you only want thermal insulation (warm in winter, cool in summer) or also acoustic insulation, increased safety, a decorative touch or a combination of these?
We are happy to advise you on your choice
You can count on our expertise to recommend glass that exactly meets your needs. Double glazing that turns your house or apartment into a comfortable, energy-efficient and safe living space.
This takes into account your budget, insulation needs and aesthetic preferences.
You can choose from standard thermal double glazing to advanced high-efficiency glass (HR++), laminated safety glass, double sound-resistant glass. And, the revolutionary Fineo glass solution.
Choosing the right double glazing not only increases the comfort but also the value of your house or apartment.
The type of double glazing you should choose depends on your specific needs and objectives. Do you only want heat insulation or are you also looking for glass that is suitable for sound insulation, or that offers extra protection against burglary? Can it be plain glass or do you want printed glass, with a specific logo or drawing?
The different types of double glazing from our range
For double glazing in your existing window frames, you can choose from the following types of double glazing:
Fineo glass – the cream of the crop for new glazing
Fineo is an innovation in the field of glass. A relatively new type of vacuum insulating glass.
It consists of two glass plates a few millimeters thick, covered with an insulating coating and with a very thin vacuum-separated cavity (0,7W/m².K
It provides superior thermal insulation equivalent or better than triple glazing (HR+++), while being significantly lighter and thinner.
This makes it ideal for renovation projects where the existing window frames are retained.
Thermal double glazing
This type of double glazing consists of two panes of glass separated by a cavity (air space) filled with dry air. This application is no longer used that often (coef. 2.7W/m².K), but it is mainly used for repairs.
High-efficiency double glazing HR++
HR++ glass is double glazing with a special coating, which makes it insulate very well.
The cavity is filled with argon, krypton, or a mixture of different gases, which also provides a better insulation value than standard double glazing.
The type of high-efficiency double glazing that we install most often is double glazing type 4-10-4 with a special gas mix from AGC in the cavity, which achieves an insulation value with a coefficient of 0.9.
Double glazing with extra features
Laminated double glazing
This glass combines a normal glass plate with a laminated glass plate. The laminated glass plate consists of two panes with a clear, tough PVB film in between (type 33.1 - 1 film = safety glass) or different types of PVB films (e.g. type 33.2, 44.2, 44.4 or others = burglar-resistant).
Acoustic double glazing
Double soundinsulated glass with one side acoustic laminated glass type 44.2.
This specific type of double glazing type 44.2-cavity-4mm offers a noise reduction of -39dB.
Furthermore, double glazing can also be installed with different thicknesses of the glass plates, e.g. 1 side 6mm and the other side 4mm. This type of glass is not acoustic glass, but the asymmetry does provide better sound insulation (-34dB)
Printed double glazing
• For decorative purposes, you can choose a pattern of your choice that suits your home or interior.
• For privacy reasons or light control, when installing new glazing in the bathroom or to regulate the amount of sunlight entering a room.
The range of printed windows is very extensive.
Comparison between the types of double glazing
Thermal Insulation: Fineo glass offers the best thermal insulation (0.7 W/m².K), followed by HR++ glass (coefficient varies between 0.8 to 2.0W/m².K, depending on the thickness of the cavity)
HR++ is a good choice for energy savings, while Fineo glass is ideal for both energy savings and situations where there is limited space.
Both options also have an acoustic variant.
Sound insulation: Double sound-resistant glass offers the best sound insulation, thanks to the acoustic PVB foil in the glass. This makes it an excellent choice for homes in noisy environments. The burglar-resistant double glazing with laminated glass on one side also provides improved sound insulation, but less than the specific sound-resistant type.
Safety: Laminated glass, such as sound-resistant double glazing and burglar-resistant double glazing, offers the best security options due to the presence of the tough plastic film that prevents the glass from shattering when broken.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can double glazing also help keep the heat out?
Yes, AGC's all-season glass, type ENERGY 72/38, can indeed help keep heat out. (see technical sheet)
Anti-UV glass (with one side 33.2 or 44.2) can also block UV rays, which can reduce the discoloration of furniture and floor coverings due to incoming sunlight.
Can double glazing help to insulate sound?
Yes, double glazing can certainly help to insulate sound. Asymmetrical thicknesses such as 1 side 4mm and 1 side 6mm provide a sound barrier that reduces the transmission of sound from outside to inside and vice versa. It is an effective way to reduce noise pollution.
For even better sound insulation, the specially designed acoustic laminated glass type 44.2 can be used. Such glazing is particularly useful in areas prone to high noise, such as near airports, busy roads or in urban environments. However, complete attenuation of sound is not possible.
Is there a warranty on the product?
The standard warranty from the glass suppliers as well as on RENOVER's work is 10 years.
Depending on the supplier, there are a number of conditions.
What is the installation process for reglazing and how long does it take?
If the installation takes longer than a day, you can count on us not leaving your home until the window sashes have been replaced that day, so that they are safe and draught-proof at night. You can view the installation method here.
Can my existing frame support double glazing or are adjustments required?
Every home is unique. That is why our specialist will visit you on site to view your windows, listen to your wishes and advise you. If your window frame is damaged, or your window hinges or closures are in poor condition, we will take care of the necessary repair, strengthening or replacement.
Are there subsidies or government support available for the installation of energy-efficient glass?
There are different types of premiums and subsidies in Flanders, the Brussels Capital Region and Wallonia.

Wallonia: energie.wallonie.be
